🌍 Meta fined N220M in Nigeria and they’re pushing back
Meta has just been hit with a jaw-dropping N220 million fine by Nigeria’s FCCPC over shocking allegations of data privacy violations. The tech giant is accused of mishandling user data, putting millions of Nigerians at risk. But Meta isn’t backing down; they’re appealing, claiming they were denied due process. This isn’t just another legal dispute, this is a high-stakes showdown that could completely reshape Nigeria’s data privacy landscape.
This fine could be a game-changer. With Meta fighting back and Nigeria doubling down on its data protection laws, the outcome of this battle will have huge implications for tech giants operating in Africa.
The question is: Will Nigeria succeed in holding these behemoths accountable, or will they walk away unscathed?
🌍 Lendsqr Faces Backlash Over AI That Assesses Borrowers by Voice and Face
Lendsqr has just unveiled a groundbreaking AI model that assesses Nigerian borrowers using only their face and voice. This innovative approach aims to provide small loans to individuals without traditional financial documentation, potentially revolutionizing access to credit for the underbanked.
However, the move has sparked controversy, with critics raising concerns about privacy and the ethical implications of using biometric data for financial assessments.

🗺️ Zap Trouble: CBN Slaps Paystack with ₦250 Million Fine for Regulatory Violation
Nigeria's Central Bank has slapped Paystack with a hefty ₦250 million fine over its new consumer app, Zap. The CBN alleges that Zap, launched just two months ago, is operating as a digital wallet, a function Paystack isn't licensed for. Instead, Paystack holds a 'switching and processing' license, which limits it to routing transactions, not holding customer funds.
The CBN's action underscores the growing tension between fintech innovation and regulatory compliance in Nigeria's financial sector. Paystack has stated it's working closely with the regulator but has refrained from public comment.
